LGBTQIA+ Intensive Outpatient Program
LGBTQIA+ Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in San Diego
At Element Q Healing Center, we believe LGBTQIA+ individuals deserve more than generic outpatient treatment. Our San Diego IOP represents a revolutionary approach to intensive outpatient care, designed by and for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Whether you’re navigating depression, anxiety, complex trauma, PTSD, substance use, dual diagnosis, gender dysphoria, or minority stress affecting your daily life, our program specializes in nervous system healing and somatic trauma recovery. We understand that trauma lives in your body, not just your mind—and that discrimination, rejection, and hiding who you are take a physical toll.
How IOP at Element Q is Different
Trauma-Focused Clinical Excellence
We acknowledge that recovery is not one-size-fits-all. IOP at Element Q is both intentional and individualized, offering evidence-based trauma healing modalities like Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, and Cognitive Processing Therapy. With 2-3 individual therapy sessions per week and comprehensive neuropsychological testing, you receive accurate diagnosis and truly personalized care—addressing the root causes of your struggles, not just symptoms.
Integrated Psychiatric & Holistic Care
At Element Q, our on-site psychiatrist works directly with your treatment team—ensuring coordinated care that understands both the clinical and cultural aspects of your treatment. When appropriate, medication decisions are made collaboratively, with clear education about how medications work and what to expect, so you can make informed choices about your care. We integrate weekly traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, trauma-informed yoga, and somatic practices alongside psychiatric support. This complete mind-body-spirit approach respects your autonomy while supporting lasting wellness.
By and For the LGBTQIA+ Community
Element Q was built by and for the LGBTQIA+ community, with affirming care at the center of everything we do. Every therapist and case manager at Element Q Healing Center identifies as LGBTQIA+, bringing both lived experience and advanced clinical expertise. Our team understands minority stress, healthcare discrimination, and the unique ways trauma shows up in our community. This is more than “LGBTQ-friendly” treatment— it’s care shaped by lived experience and grounded in deep clinical skill.
What to Expect In Our San Diego IOP
Our Intensive Outpatient Program provides comprehensive, trauma-focused care through structured morning programming that includes both group and individual therapeutic support. Here’s what you’ll experience as part of our program:
Accurate Diagnosis from Day One
Every client receives comprehensive neuropsychological testing at the start of treatment. This full evaluation is different from your standard treatment assessment. It ensures you’re receiving the right diagnosis, medications, and therapeutic interventions—preventing the misdiagnosis that many individuals in treatment experience. Your results inform your individualized treatment plan from the beginning.
2-3 Individual Therapy Sessions Every Week
Unlike many IOP programs that offer only one session per week, Element Q provides multiple one-on-one sessions weekly with licensed clinicians who are members of the LGBTQIA+ community and trained in evidence-based trauma modalities including Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and attachment-based approaches. This means truly personalized support for your unique healing journey.
Daily Somatic & Trauma-Focused Group Therapy
Attend 3 hours of group therapy from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM on the days you come to treatment—either three mornings per week or five mornings per week, depending on what level of support you need. Each morning includes process groups where you’ll connect with other LGBTQIA+ individuals in a safe, supportive space, skill-building groups focused on healing trauma and managing emotions, and educational sessions on topics like healthy relationships, understanding how trauma affects your brain and body, and building coping skills for lasting recovery.
Expert On-Site Psychiatric Care & Medication Management
Our psychiatrist works directly with your treatment team in our center—not through telehealth. This means consistent psychiatric evaluation, medication management when needed, and adjustments throughout your treatment, with your mental health provider actively involved in your day-to-day care and understanding the unique mental health needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Weekly Acupuncture & Holistic Healing Services
Receive weekly traditional Chinese medicine sessions including acupuncture as part of your comprehensive treatment plan. This holistic modality supports nervous system regulation, pain management, emotional balance, and overall mind-body healing—included in your program.
Non-Judgmental Approach to Substance Use
We view addiction differently—not as a moral failing, but as a strategy that once helped you cope with pain but has lost its effectiveness. Our Conscious Recovery approach recognizes that underneath substance use is a whole person seeking relief from trauma, discrimination, spiritual disconnection, and shame. We address these root causes—not just your symptoms—and honor all paths to healing, rather than requiring strict adherence to 12-step models. For LGBTQIA+ individuals whose substance use is often connected to navigating unsafe spaces, managing minority stress, or surviving discrimination, this compassionate, shame-free approach creates space for genuine healing.
Personalized LGBTQ+ Specific Treatment
Your treatment plan is individualized to your specific needs, goals, and diagnosis. Our interdisciplinary team—all members of the LGBTQIA+ community—collaborates continuously to ensure your care addresses the root causes of your struggles, whether mental health, substance use, dual diagnosis, or complex trauma.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the IOP schedule? How long will it last?
Our IOP offers two flexible options: 3-day IOP (IOPx3) meets three mornings per week of your choice, and 5-day IOP (IOPx5) meets Monday through Friday. Both run from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The length of treatment varies based on your individual needs and progress—some clients complete IOP in 4-6 weeks, while others benefit from longer participation. Your treatment team will work with you to determine the right timeline for your recovery, and we adjust based on how you’re doing.
2. How are PHP & IOP different?
IOP provides 9-15 hours of therapy and groups per week (mornings only, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM) while PHP provides 30 hours per week (full days, 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM). IOP allows you to maintain work, school, or other responsibilities while getting structured support. PHP is more intensive and appropriate when you need a higher level of support. Many people step down from PHP to IOP as they progress, or step up from weekly therapy to IOP when they need more support.
3. How many people will be in the IOP program at once?
Our IOP groups are intentionally small to ensure everyone receives personalized attention and has space to participate meaningfully. Group sizes are typically 6-8 clients, creating an intimate environment where you can build genuine connections with others navigating similar experiences. Every person in the program is LGBTQIA+, and groups are facilitated by LGBTQIA+ clinicians.
4. What types of therapy are included in IOP?
IOP includes evidence-based trauma therapies like EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing, and Cognitive Processing Therapy, plus skills-based groups teaching DBT and CBT techniques. You’ll also receive 2-3 individual therapy sessions per week, holistic modalities like acupuncture and sound healing, and process groups for emotional connection. All therapeutic approaches are delivered through an LGBTQIA+-affirming, trauma-informed lens by clinicians who are members of the community.
5. Is Element Q's IOP in San Diego covered by insurance?
Yes, most insurance plans cover IOP. At Element Q, we accept most major insurance plans and handle all the verification work for you—our team checks your benefits before you start and explains exactly what you’ll pay, so there are no surprises. We can also help you understand your financial options if cost is a concern.
