Neurodivergent Therapy in San Diego for LGBTQIA+ Adults
Many neurodivergent LGBTQIA+ adults arrive at treatment after years of being missed, misdiagnosed, or worn down by treatment that wasn’t built for them. Evidence suggests that neurodivergent individuals, particularly those diagnosed with autism, are significantly more likely to identify as LGBTQIA+ than those who are neurotypical [1].
At Element Q Healing Center, mental health and substance use treatment for neurodivergent adults is woven into our partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP) in San Diego. We don’t treat neurodivergence as something to fix. We treat the anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use concerns that bring neurodivergent adults to treatment in an environment designed to support neurodivergent individuals.
Who Benefits From Our Neurodivergent Affirming Program
You may benefit from treatment in San Diego if:
- Sensory input that others handle leaves you exhausted or shut down
- You’ve spent years masking, scripting, or working twice as hard to look fine
- You’re in burnout, and the strategies that used to work aren’t working anymore
- You have ADHD, autism, or both, and your mental health has gotten tangled up in it
- Criticism or perceived rejection hits hard and lingers for hours or days
- You suspect your neurodivergence has been missed, dismissed, or mistaken for something else
- Being queer or trans in a world that doesn’t get your identity or your brain has taken a real toll
Start With The Whole Picture & Accurate Diagnosis
Neurodivergence is frequently missed in LGBTQIA+ adults. Many arrive with a stack of past diagnoses that captured pieces of the experience but missed what was underneath. Others suspect they’re neurodivergent but have never been formally evaluated.
Every client at Element Q begins treatment with comprehensive neuropsychological testing. You don’t need to come in with a diagnosis. Testing shapes everything that follows, including treatment approaches and medication conversations.
What Neurodivergent-Affirming Treatment Looks Like
What you can expect:
- A dedicated triage room available when you need a moment to regulate or reset
- Sensory accommodations: adjustable lighting, fidgets, freedom to move, stim, or shift how you sit
- Pacing that respects neurodivergent processing time
- Two to three individual sessions a week with an LGBTQIA+ clinician
- Groups blending skills work (DBT, CBT, CPT) with body-based modalities (EMDR, IFS, somatic therapy)
- On-site psychiatry for medication conversations
- Case management that handles insurance, scheduling, and paperwork
Why Neurodivergence Literacy Matters in Mental Health Treatment
What real literacy looks like here:
- Treatment built for neurodivergent adults, not adapted from neurotypical models
- Clinicians who understand masking, sensory load, burnout, and minority stress as connected, not separate
- Real fluency across ADHD, autism, AuDHD, and overlapping presentations
- Every clinician and case manager is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community

Frequently Asked Questions
What does neurodivergent-affirming therapy actually mean?
Neurodivergent-affirming therapy treats neurodivergence as a difference, not a deficit. In practice, that means clinicians who understand how ADHD, autism, and other neurotypes shape mental health, sensory accommodations built into the environment, and pacing that respects how your brain processes information.
Do I need a formal diagnosis to start treatment?
No. Many neurodivergent adults arrive without a formal diagnosis, either because they were missed in childhood or because diagnosis as an adult is expensive and hard to access. Every client receives comprehensive neuropsychological testing as part of enrollment in our PHP and IOP, so you don’t need to come in with a diagnosis.
Can you treat both autism and ADHD at the same time?
Yes. Many adults are both autistic and ADHD (sometimes called AuDHD), and treatment built around only one often misses the other. Neuropsych testing captures the full picture, and treatment is built around how your specific brain works.
Does insurance cover neurodivergent-affirming mental health treatment?
Most major insurance plans cover PHP and IOP when they’re considered medically necessary. We verify your benefits before you start and explain your costs upfront.
