San Diego Alcohol Addiction Treatement Center
Alcohol addiction treatment at Element Q Healing Center offers LGBTQIA+ individuals a path to recovery grounded in identity-affirming, trauma-focused care. Located in San Diego, Element Q provides outpatient support through Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs designed to address both alcohol use and the underlying experiences that often drive it—including trauma, minority stress, and mental health concerns. Created by the community, for the community, Element Q’s LGBTQIA+ clinical team brings both lived experience and advanced expertise to every aspect of care. If you’re exploring substance use treatment in San Diego, this is a space where your identity is embraced and respected from the start.
Who Benefits from Alcohol Rehab
Alcohol addiction treatment at Element Q is designed for people whose relationship with alcohol has started affecting their daily life, relationships, work, or sense of self. You don’t need to have reached a crisis point to benefit from structured support.
You may benefit from outpatient alcohol treatment if you’re experiencing:
- Difficulty cutting back despite wanting to, or increased tolerance over time
- Drinking to cope with anxiety, depression, trauma, or minority stress
- Alcohol use connected to chemsex or party-and-play contexts
- Co-occurring mental health concerns like PTSD, complex trauma, or gender dysphoria
- A need for more intensive support than weekly therapy, without requiring residential care
- A transition from inpatient, residential, or detox
This service is built for LGBTQIA+ individuals who may have faced barriers to care elsewhere. At Element Q, your identity isn’t something to explain or defend—it’s affirmed from the start. If you’re navigating alcohol use alongside mental health concerns, Element Q’s integrated dual-diagnosis approach means we’ll address the full picture of your healing from day one.
What Makes Element Q Healing Different
From Other San Diego Addiction Treatment Centers?
Trauma-Focused Clinical Excellence
We don’t just manage symptoms—we address root causes. Treatment includes evidence-based trauma modalities like EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, and Internal Family Systems, with neuropsychological testing at intake to ensure accurate diagnosis from day one. Your treatment plan evolves with you.
Integrated Psychiatric & Holistic Care
Our board-certified psychiatrist is on-site nearly every day, collaborating directly with your therapists. Medication decisions are made together, with full transparency. We integrate acupuncture, sound healing, and trauma-informed yoga as core treatment—not optional extras.
All Recovery Pathways Honored
We don’t push one-size-fits-all recovery. Element Q integrates Conscious Recovery principles and welcomes all pathways to healing—12-step, SMART, Refuge, Dharma, and others. Treatment isn’t religious or dogmatic. Clients choose the path that resonates with them.
By and For the LGBTQIA+ Community
Every therapist and case manager at Element Q identifies as LGBTQIA+. This isn’t “LGBTQ-friendly” care—it’s structured, clinically rigorous treatment delivered by people who understand minority stress, healthcare discrimination, and how trauma and identity intersect.
Our Dual Diagnosis Treatment Programs
What's the Difference? PHP vs. IOP
Element Q offers two levels of outpatient care. Both allow you to live at home while receiving structured, therapeutic support—the difference is intensity and schedule. Neither requires you to put your life on hold completely, and both provide access to the same clinical team, holistic modalities, and affirming environment.
PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program)
PHP is full-day treatment, five days a week. Programming runs Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and is designed for people who need intensive daily support. This might include early recovery, a transition from detox or residential care, or a period where weekly therapy isn't providing enough structure. PHP includes daily group therapy, 2-3 individual therapy sessions per week, on-site psychiatric care, and holistic modalities. Lunch is provided. You attend during the day and return home each evening.
IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program)
IOP is part-day treatment, three days a week. It provides meaningful structure with greater flexibility—designed for people who need consistent therapeutic support while also maintaining work, school, or family responsibilities. IOP includes group therapy, individual sessions, and holistic care, delivered with the same clinical depth as PHP. Many clients step down to IOP after completing PHP, though it can also be a starting point depending on your needs.
How Element Q Treats the
Root Causes of Alcohol Addiction
Most treatment focuses on stopping addictive behavior and patterns. Element Q’s clinical philosophy goes deeper.
Conscious Recovery, developed by co-founder TJ Woodward, starts from a different premise: addiction isn’t a moral failure—it’s a coping strategy that once helped someone survive but has stopped working. Instead of focusing only on alcohol, treatment addresses what’s underneath: unresolved trauma, shame, and disconnection.
This approach holds that underneath addictive behavior is a whole person—not someone broken who needs fixing. Recovery is about reconnecting with parts of the self that may have been buried under years of survival strategies. For many LGBTQIA+ individuals, those strategies developed in response to rejection, discrimination, or the pressure to hide. Conscious Recovery honors that reality without judgment.
Healing also doesn’t happen in isolation. Restorative justice practices are woven into treatment at Element Q Healing, creating space to process harm, rebuild trust, and develop healthy relationships within a supportive community.
Trauma-Focused vs. Trauma-Informed Care
Many treatment centers describe themselves as trauma-informed—meaning they recognize trauma exists and try to avoid re-traumatization. That’s an important baseline, but it doesn’t mean trauma is being directly addressed in treatment.
Trauma-focused care goes a step further. At Element Q Healing, identifying, processing, and resolving trauma is central to the clinical work—not something acknowledged in the background. This distinction matters for alcohol addiction because drinking often develops as a way to manage unresolved traumatic experiences. Treatment that doesn’t address those root causes may leave the cycle intact.
Trauma-focused treatment at Element Q includes EMDR therapy, somatic therapy, and nervous system regulation. Clinicians are trained to sit with clients through trauma responses, and a dedicated triage room provides space when processing becomes overwhelming. For LGBTQIA+ individuals, this approach is especially relevant—minority stress, discrimination, and the long-term impact of concealing one’s identity can all contribute to complex trauma, even when it’s not immediately recognized as such.
What Makes Element Q Different
From Other San Diego Alcohol Rehabs
Element Q Healing was created by the community, for the community. You won’t spend time educating your therapist about what it means to be queer or trans before you can get to the real work. They get it, because they share your lived experience.
Beyond being LGBTQIA+ owned and operated, what sets Element Q apart:
- A psychiatrist embedded in your care team and physically present in the center allows for real-time adjustments and collaboration that telehealth-based psychiatric care can’t match.
- Conscious Recovery principles that treat addiction as a whole-person experience rooted in trauma, shame, and disconnection—not a behavior to be punished or managed.
- Restorative justice practices support healing in relationship and community rather than through punitive models.
- Holistic healing arts allow for a whole-person approach to healing, because trauma lives in the body, not just the mind.
- Dedicated case management that removes practical barriers so you can fully engage in the therapeutic work.
- A space where queer and trans identities are celebrated and fully seen—not just accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does rehab cost in San Diego?
Costs for drug and alcohol rehab vary based on level of care, insurance, and treatment length. Outpatient programs like PHP and IOP are often more affordable than residential programs, and insurance frequently covers a significant portion. Element Q’s admissions team can verify benefits and explain costs before you begin.
How long is inpatient alcohol rehab usually?
Inpatient rehab typically lasts 30 to 90 days. Element Q offers outpatient care (PHP and IOP), which allows you to live at home while receiving intensive support. Many people start with outpatient treatment, while others step down to it after completing residential or inpatient care. If you have questions about which level of care would best support you or your loved one, our admissions team is here to help. Contact us today to begin the conversation.
What if I need detox before starting outpatient treatment?
Element Q doesn’t provide detox on-site, but can connect you with trusted detox centers in San Diego. Our team can help coordinate a safe transition into PHP or IOP once detox is complete.
How successful is alcohol rehab?
Research shows that treatment addressing both substance use and underlying mental health concerns leads to better outcomes. Element Q’s trauma-focused, dual-diagnosis approach integrates therapy, psychiatric care, and holistic modalities—factors associated with stronger engagement and long-term recovery.
What is the difference between PHP and IOP?
PHP is full-day treatment (Monday–Friday, 9:30 AM–3:30 PM). IOP meets three days per week with more flexibility for those who need it. Both programs include individual therapy, group sessions, psychiatric care, and holistic healing modalities. The right fit depends largely on the level of support needed by you or your loved one.
Can I work while in outpatient treatment?
PHP’s daytime schedule makes full-time work difficult, though some clients arrange part-time or adjusted hours. IOP is more compatible with work or school. Element Q’s case management team can help navigate employer conversations for those that need it.
