San Diego Addiction Treatment Center

LGBTQIA+ Affirming Healing

LGBTQIA+ Addiction Treatment Center in San Diego

If you’re looking for an addiction treatment center in San Diego that actually understands LGBTQIA+ experiences, Element Q Healing Center offers something different. Our outpatient programs—Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP)—provide structured, daily support for substance use and mental health challenges in an environment built by and for the LGBTQIA+ community. Every clinician on our team identifies as LGBTQIA+, bringing both clinical expertise and lived experience to your care.

At Element Q, your identity isn’t an afterthought to treatment—it’s understood from the start. Whether you’re navigating alcohol use, substance use, prescription medication concerns, or substances connected to chemsex and party culture, our team will meet you with respect, compassion, and care.

Treatment Center Supports

Element Q Healing serves LGBTQIA+ adults whose substance use has started affecting their daily life, relationships, work, or well-being. We recognize that everyone’s path to treatment looks different, and there’s no single profile of someone who benefits from treatment.

You might consider addiction treatment if you’re experiencing:

  • Alcohol, stimulant, or other substance use that feels out of control or difficult to manage alone
  • Substance use tied to social contexts like chemsex, party culture, or coping with minority stress
  • Co-occurring mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or trauma alongside substance use (dual diagnosis)
  • Gender dysphoria or identity-related distress compounded by substance use
  • Past treatment experiences that felt dismissive, uncomfortable, or not designed with LGBTQIA+ people in mind
  • A need for more structured support while continuing to live at home

For LGBTQIA+ individuals, treatment that centers identity and lived experience reduces the emotional labor of constantly explaining who you are. Care works better when you don’t have to edit yourself to receive it.

If you’re unsure whether Element Q is the right fit, our team is here to help you explore your options without pressure.

What Treatment Looks Like At Element Q

About Our San Diego Treatment Programs

Element Q is an outpatient addiction treatment center, meaning you attend structured daily programming and return home in the evenings. Treatment combines individual therapy, group therapy, holistic modalities, and psychiatric care—all coordinated under one roof by a team that works together to offer an approach that is truly individualized.

Treatment begins with a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation to understand your diagnoses, how trauma may be affecting you, and what clinical approaches are most likely to help. From there, your treatment plan is tailored based on your specific needs, goals, and diagnosis.

PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program)

PHP is our most intensive level of outpatient care, providing approximately 30 hours of weekly programming. You attend Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Each week includes two to three individual therapy sessions, daily trauma-focused group therapy, holistic healing sessions such as acupuncture, sound healing, and trauma-informed yoga, and access to on-site psychiatric care.

IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program)

IOP offers structured morning programming from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, with the option of attending three or five days per week. It provides meaningful therapeutic support while allowing more flexibility for work, school, or family responsibilities. IOP can serve as a starting point for treatment, a step-down from PHP, or a step-up from weekly therapy that isn't enough on its own.

PHP vs. IOP: Choosing the Right Level of Care

The main difference between PHP and IOP is the intensity and time commitment.

PHP provides daily, full-day programming and is designed for people who need close and intensive support, alongside structured accountability. Many clients in PHP take a temporary leave from work or school to focus fully on treatment.

IOP provides approximately 9 to 15 hours of weekly programming and offers more room to maintain your daily responsibilities. It’s best for those who need more than weekly therapy but can manage their safety and basic functioning while living at home.

Not sure which level of care is right for you? Our compassionate admissions team can walk through your options with you and help you determine what makes the most sense for your specific situation. Contact us today to begin the conversation.

Trauma-Informed vs.
Trauma-Focused Treatment

Many addiction treatment centers describe their care as “trauma-informed,” which typically means staff are trained to recognize the impact of trauma and avoid re-traumatization. Trauma-focused care goes a step further. It means trauma is actively addressed through clinical interventions designed to process and resolve it—not just acknowledge it.

At Element Q, treatment is built around evidence-based trauma modalities, including EMDR therapy, somatic therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Processing Therapy, and more.

For LGBTQIA+ folx, this distinction matters. Discrimination, rejection, family estrangement, and navigating unsafe environments leave a physical imprint. Addiction is often tied to these experiences. Trauma-focused care recognizes that healing needs to happen in the body as well as the mind, and provides tools to make that possible.

What Makes Element Q Healing Different

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long does addiction treatment usually last?

The length of treatment depends on individual needs, progress, and goals. Most people participate in PHP or IOP for several weeks to a few months. Some clients complete IOP in four to six weeks, while others benefit from longer engagement. Your clinical team will work with you to determine the right timeline for your situation, and adjustments are made based on how you’re progressing, rather than a fixed schedule.

Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on your specific situation, the severity of what you’re experiencing, and your responsibilities and individual needs. Inpatient (residential) treatment provides 24-hour care and is appropriate when someone needs round-the-clock support or detox. Outpatient treatment, including PHP and IOP, provides intensive daily programming while allowing you to live at home. Many people step down from inpatient care to PHP or IOP, while others start with outpatient care because it meets their needs from the beginning.

PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) is full-day treatment, Monday through Friday. It’s the most intensive outpatient option and is ideal if you need daily structure and close support.

IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) meets only in the mornings, three or five days per week. It offers meaningful support with more flexibility to maintain work, school, or family life.

Treatment includes individual therapy two to three times per week, daily group therapy focused on processing experiences and building skills, holistic modalities like acupuncture and sound healing, and regular sessions with an on-site psychiatrist. Treatment begins with a neuropsychological evaluation and is tailored to your specific needs, goals, and diagnosis. Whether or not you identify as having experienced trauma, our program is designed to help you move past difficult experiences without re-traumatization. Our goal is to make your world bigger, never smaller.

Many clients in IOP continue working—sessions are mornings only (9:30 AM to 12:30 PM), leaving afternoons and evenings free. PHP’s full-day schedule (9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday) makes full-time work harder, so most clients take a temporary leave or reduce their hours. If necessary, our case management team can help you figure out logistics and navigate conversations with your employer.
